26730: Describe newborn hearing screening and the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: hearing screening and the difference between screening and diagnosis; the aim and goals of the UNHSEIP; the hearing screening pathway for newborns; population-based programmes for newborn hearing screening and the significance of early screening; and the rights of consumers of hearing screening procedures.


26731: Describe the types and causes of hearing loss and hearing screening methods for newborns
Level 4  |  Version 2

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: types and causes of hearing loss in newborns; and the Automated Otoacoustic Emissions (AOAE) and Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) newborn hearing screening methods.


26732: Describe safety requirements for newborns for the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe safety requirements for newborns for the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme.


26733: Describe risk factors and protocols for hearing screening of well babies and babies in neonatal or special care units

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: risk factors, and protocols for identifying and recording risk factors, for hearing screening of well babies and babies in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU); and protocols for hearing screening of well babies and babies in a NICU or SCBU, and for completing the Patient Data Form.


26734: Describe administration procedures for the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: the reasons for recording information related to newborn hearing screening on the Patient Data Form; the procedures for identifying and tracking a newborn through the hearing screening process; the procedures related to informed consent for newborn hearing screening, and the privacy and confidentiality requirements of the UNHSEIP; and the procedures for recording, distributing, and storing copies of the Patient Data Form; and the follow-up processes for hearing screening results.


26735: Describe the use and maintenance of hearing screening equipment for the UNHSEIP

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: hearing screening equipment for the UNHSEIP and its use; the procedures for maintaining hearing screening equipment; and the procedures for downloading different types of data from hearing screening equipment.


26736: Describe communication and providing information and results to parents for the newborn hearing screening process

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe: communication with parents and the information to be communicated to parents related to newborn hearing screening; and the process for communicating newborn hearing screening results to parents.


26737: Carry out newborn hearing screening for the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare for newborn hearing screening; inform parents of the newborn hearing screening procedures for newborns and babies, informed consent, and convey and explain potential results; prepare for and carry out hearing screening for newborns and babies; process data related to hearing screening of newborns and babies; and communicate hearing screening results to parents.


26738: Describe referral and habilitation for the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme

This unit standard is for hearing screeners working within the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening and Early Intervention Programme (UNHSEIP). People credited with this unit standard are able to describe the audiology referral process for newborns, and demonstrate knowledge of habilitation and intervention options for newborns with hearing loss.
